We respond to latest National Cancer Patient Experience Survey results

Prostate Cancer UK reacts to the findings of the 2012-13 National Cancer Patient Experience Survey issued today (30 August 2013) by NHS England.

Drew Lindon, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Prostate Cancer UK said:

"It is encouraging to see that overall, patients are reporting that their experience of cancer is improving. This is certainly a sign that things are moving in the right direction. However the very fact that the survey scores for some trusts have deteriorated since last year highlights that wide variation in care quality continues to persist.

"For prostate cancer in particular, although we are pleased to see that some areas of care such as information provision and treatment choice are faring well, there are still some key areas of concern. Prostate cancer treatment can often bring with it debilitating side effects such as incontinence or erectile dysfunction which can have a significant impact on a man's wellbeing and lifestyle. Yet less than two-thirds of men say they are even told that they might be confronted with these issues. Furthermore less than half were given information about financial help and benefits to help them cope when living with or after the disease.

"We believe these issues around care quality as well as the continuing regional variation cannot be allowed to stand. Men with prostate cancer should expect to receive world class care and support at every stage, and regardless of where they are accessing it in the UK. This is why we have developed a quality checklist for prostate cancer care which sets out exactly what men need throughout their journey. We are working with local health organisations to ensure it is implemented across the country - because men with prostate cancer deserve the best and we're determined that's exactly what they'll get."
