Legendary radio presenter Mark Goodier is throwing his support
to The Prostate Cancer Charity by taking on the challenge of not
one, but two, of the Charity's Tour Ride cycling events this
summer.
The Smooth Radio presenter will be taking part in the 100km
route across Wales this Sunday (21 August) and will then be
tackling an 80km cycle in Stoke-on-Trent on Sunday 25th September. This will be the
second year that Mark has challenged himself to take on the Tour
Rides after completing the Stoke-on-Trent and South West rides last
year.
Mark is a dedicated supporter of the Charity and is keen to
raise awareness of prostate cancer after losing his father-in-law
to the disease. Ahead of the Wales ride this weekend, Mark said:
"Prostate cancer took Bill away from us years before his time and
the real shame is we know that so much can be done if the disease
is detected early. I'm committed to doing what I can to spread the
word."
He said of last year's ride: ""I thought it was an amazing
experience. There was a real community spirit at the start, which
was very welcome given the challenge that was facing us.
"It was definitely the most difficult terrain I have ever
experienced - and I am just glad to have survived! I was very happy
with my two and a half hours."
Mark will be taking on two official stages of the Tour of
Britain race which will be contested by the professionals in
September. His rides will take in some of the country's most
stunning scenery as he cycles across the Brecon Beacons in Wales
and Staffordshire Moorlands in Stoke-on-Trent.
Now in their third year, The Prostate Cancer Charity's Tour
Rides are an established part of the sportive calendar for amateur
cyclists with over 4,500 amateur riders taking part in three events
last year.
Following on from this success, which saw riders raise over
£520,000, The Prostate Cancer Charity has extended its offering to
five events this year, giving people the opportunity to take on
Tour Rides in East Anglia, Wales and Scotland alongside existing
rides in London and Stoke-on-Trent.
The Charity's unique partnership with The Tour of Britain, aims
to bring people together through cycling to help raise awareness of
prostate cancer, which is the most common form of cancer in men in
the UK.
Katie Robbins, Tour of Britain Project Manager at The Prostate
Cancer Charity, says: "It's fantastic to have Mark's continued
support for the Charity and I'm delighted that he will be riding in
two events again this year. I hope that people with an interest in
cycling will get on their bikes to raise awareness of prostate
cancer and funds for the Charity.
"Over the past three years, The Prostate Cancer Charity has
developed strong links with professional and amateur cyclists
through our partnership with The Tour of Britain which have been
invaluable in helping us to get many more people thinking about the
disease."
