Special supplement in The Times puts the spotlight on prostate cancer

A special supplement dedicated to prostate cancer, which appeared in The Times on Wednesday 26 October, has helped to raise awareness of the disease.

Produced by Raconteur Media, in association with The Prostate Cancer Charity, the 16-page supplement focused on all aspects of prostate cancer, from research to treatment options and personal testimonies on the emotional impact of the disease. It also highlighted the fact that 'moustache season is open', as men across the land abandon their razors for the start of Movember. The annual sponsored moustache-growing event last year raised £11.7 million for the Charity, Movember's beneficiary partner in the UK.

Owen Sharp gave his perspective on the challenges facing the cause of prostate cancer as the new Chief Executive of the Charity, in the foreword to the publication, which is now in its fourth year.

Max Clifford, long-standing Ambassador for the Charity, wrote a column for the supplement on his views on the PSA blood test, the best test currently available to denote a problem with the prostate. PR consultant Max, was successfully treated for the disease some years ago, and he campaigns with the Charity to raise awareness in other men.

The independent publication also featured a host of experts on prostate cancer discussing issues surrounding the disease.

Owen Sharp said: "The supplement, which has been very well received by our supporters and key contacts, and, importantly, has resulted in an increase in calls to the Charity's Helpline, run by specialist nurses by men wanting to find out more about this disease. The publication is a great platform for us to engage with health professionals, opinion leaders, as well as a great opportunity to reach men, and the women in their lives, who may have a concern about the disease. To have 16 pages dedicated to not only raising awareness of prostate cancer, but setting out what the Charity will be doing to address the inequalities which still surround this disease has proved to be very positive."

Henrik Kanekrans, of Raconteur Media, said: "Working with institutions like The Prostate Cancer Charity is central to our vision at Raconteur, providing a platform to charities or private companies upon which to communicate their core message within a relevant editorial environment. We are proud to be able to offer this solution to creating awareness of such a serious condition, which affects so many men and their families, and look forward to working together on future reports."
